2025 William F. Buckley Jr. Forever Stamps

The United States Postal Service’s William F. Buckley Jr. stamp, issued on Sept. 9, experienced an unexpected surge in collector interest that led to a swift sellout of the no-die-cut press sheets on the first day of release.

Within hours of the stamp’s release, this version of the press sheet was no longer available through USPS’s Stamp Fulfillment Services.

“Due to unexpected demand, Stamp Fulfillment Services sold out of the William F. Buckley press sheets without die-cuts on the First Day of Issue,” said USPS spokesman Jim McKean in an email to Linn’s Stamp News.

The statement confirmed what many collectors had already discovered — this highly sought-after format had vanished from the USPS online store far more quickly than anticipated.

Buckley, a prominent author, television host, and founder of National Review, is remembered as a towering figure in 20th-century American political commentary. The forever stamp honoring him features a portrait by artist Dale Stephanos, based on a photograph by Steve Schapiro, and was issued in a pane of 20 stamps.

The press sheet without die cuts, which includes four full panes of stamps, carried a face value of $62.40, a more affordable price compared to some recent press sheets that have had face values over $100.

The press sheet with die cuts remains available for purchase.

The Buckley sellout follows a similar pattern to earlier issues this year, such as the Battlefields of the American Revolution press sheet without die cuts, which also sold out on its first day.

Whether these instances represent a trend in renewed collector enthusiasm or point to underproduction of these niche formats remains to be seen.
